The Nigerian Air Force confirms 25 dead following the fatal crash of its ATR-42 transport aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State.

Nigerian Air Force confirms 25 dead following the tragic crash of its ATR-42 surveillance and transport aircraft in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State, officially ruling out any survivors from the devastating accident.

The military high command revised the casualty manifest down from the initial figure of 32 passengers previously communicated by civilian authorities, confirming that 20 passengers and five crew members perished on impact.

The twin-turboprop maritime patrol plane, bearing tail number NAF 931, disappeared from civil radar at approximately 9:13 a.m. while conducting a routine logistics run from Benin City to Lagos before crashing near the naval base.

Verified Crew and Passenger Manifest Released

Following notifications to the next of kin, military authorities published the full casualty roll to curb unverified speculation surrounding the personnel aboard the doomed aircraft.

The cockpit crew members who lost their lives were identified as Squadron Leader MI Aburime (Flight Captain), Squadron Leader AP Man-Ugwueje (Co-pilot), and Flight Lieutenant IS Bako (Co-pilot).

Technical flight operations personnel on board included Warrant Officer Abubakar A and Corporal Uguru HC, both serving as certified aircraft technicians.

Among the passengers were officers Flight Lieutenant TL Lazarus, Flight Lieutenant M Akinloye, and Flying Officer IM Adeshina, alongside non-commissioned personnel and civilian family dependents travelling on official logistics clearance.

Search Operations and Official Probe Directive

Eyewitnesses in riverside communities along the Igbokoda coastal corridor reported hearing a sound like a thunder strike before seeing the aircraft clip treetops and crash into the marshland.

Joint search-and-rescue teams comprising naval personnel, local emergency services, and community volunteers cordoned off the crash site opposite the Forward Operating Base to recover remains and flight recorders.

The Chief of Air Staff has directed the Air Accident Investigation Board to assemble on site immediately to establish the mechanical, meteorological, or navigation factors responsible for the disaster.

Field reports released by The Punch confirm that the aircraft’s primary wreckage remains submerged in swamp terrain as retrieval operations continue.

National Mourning and Presidential Condolences

President Bola Tinubu expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy, describing the fallen service personnel as patriotic heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their fatherland.

The federal government declared three days of national mourning and directed national flags to fly at half-mast across all military formations and public institutions nationwide.

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa commended the rapid emergency response by host communities while extending solidarity to the armed forces and the bereaved families.

Civil society groups and political leaders across the country have united in calling for swift technical transparency to address persistent air safety challenges within state transport fleets.

Operational Implications for NAF Transport Fleet

The ATR-42 turboprop platform serves as a critical workhorse for Nigerian military communications, troop insertion, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations.

Aviation safety analysts emphasise that the loss of seasoned tactical pilots and specialised maintenance personnel delivers a grievous blow to the service’s operational capacity.

Defence Headquarters said ongoing joint counter-insurgency and internal security operations across the country will continue uninterrupted despite the tragedy.
