Massive protest in the Enugu terminal paralyzed the Garriki area on Thursday morning following the tragic death of a commercial tricycle operator who was allegedly beaten to death by revenue task force officials over a ticketing dispute.
The bustling transport hub in Enugu South Local Government Area was brought to a complete standstill as hundreds of furious tricycle riders, popularly known as Keke operators, took to the streets to demand justice for their slain colleague.
The victim, identified as Mr. Friday Ani, was a man in his early 50s and a father of five who hailed from Umuatugbuoma, Akegbe-Ugwu in Nkanu West Local Government Area.
According to eyewitness accounts and formal statements surrounding the crisis, Ani met his untimely death on Wednesday night, September 30, following a violent physical altercation with revenue enforcers stationed at the Garriki Terminal.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, immediately halting economic and social activities across the suburbs and forcing several transport parks to shut down their operations for hours as the protesters barricaded major access roads.
Tragedy reportedly struck when a passenger being conveyed by Ani alighted from his tricycle just outside the designated terminal premises.
This action instantly triggered a heated confrontation with the terminal’s aggressive task force operators, who are deployed by the state to strictly enforce daily ticket collections.
“Before you realize what was going on, one of the task force officials hit the driver on his head, and he slumped,” revealed Chika Emeh, a source who witnessed the escalation and spoke with reporters.
Eyewitnesses claim the enforcers, whom some described as suspected cultists hired by terminal management, delivered the fatal blow before fleeing the chaotic scene.
Despite frantic efforts by bystanders to rush the unconscious father of five to a nearby medical facility, he was confirmed dead upon arrival.
The ongoing protest by the tricycle operators is heavily marked by loud demands that the terminal management immediately produce Ani’s killers to face the full wrath of the law.
Commuters traveling through the Enugu South corridor were left stranded, forced to trek long distances as tricycle operators completely withdrew their services in solidarity with their deceased colleague.
Many of the protesters wielded green leaves and chanted solidarity songs, swearing not to return to the roads until the government addresses the epidemic of touts masquerading as revenue agents.
In swift reaction to the tragedy, the opposition Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State issued a strong press statement condemning the killing and demanding immediate justice.
Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa expressed deep pain over the loss, stating, “He left home to earn an honest living and did not return. No Enugu citizen should lose his life, or live in fear, for the crime of working hard.”
The political faction directly linked the fatal incident to what it described as a “vicious revenue collection drive” currently operating under Governor Peter Mbah’s administration.
Critics argue that this aggressive taxation framework has crippled small-scale businesses and subjected transport workers to relentless harassment and intimidation by unverified enforcers.
The party publicly called on Governor Mbah to urgently call the Garriki Terminal task force to order and initiate a prompt, transparent investigation into the brutal murder.
According to updates monitored by Sahara Reporters, Ani’s body has since been deposited at the St. Martin’s Mortuary in Enugu as family members prepare for further police investigations.
The NDC has specifically urged the Nigeria Police Force to act professionally and impartially, ensuring that the enforcers found culpable are swiftly prosecuted to serve as a deterrent.
Meanwhile, all efforts by the media to obtain an official confirmation from the Enugu State Police Command have been unsuccessful.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, has reportedly not answered phone calls or responded to text messages regarding the deteriorating security situation at the Garriki Terminal.
As the city remains highly tense, the state government is under immense pressure to restructure its internal revenue enforcement agencies and implement digital solutions to prevent such broad-daylight atrocities from repeating themselves.
