The highly anticipated Norway vs France World Cup match 2026 delivered an absolute football masterclass in Foxborough. France secured an emphatic 4-1 victory at the Boston Stadium to finish at the absolute summit of Group I.
While fans eagerly expected a heavily billed showdown between Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, the story took an entirely different turn. Haaland remained on the bench as Norway chose to rest ten of their preferred eleven starters. Consequently, it was Paris Saint-Germain star Ousmane Dembele who stole the headlines with a historic, lightning-fast performance.
A Historic First-Half Blitz by Ousmane Dembele
France opened the match with incredible intent and nearly scored just 25 seconds into the game when Kylian Mbappe rattled the crossbar. It did not take long for Les Bleus to capitalize on their early dominance. In the 7th minute, Mbappe turned provider, sliding a perfect cross-field ball to Dembele. The winger cut inside seamlessly onto his left foot and fired past Norway’s goalkeeper, Egil Selvik.
Dembele doubled the lead in the 20th minute with an even more spectacular, angled strike from just outside the penalty box. Although Norway responded almost immediately through an un-marked Thelo Aasgaard to make it 2-1, France remained totally unfazed.
By the 32nd minute, Dembele completed the second-fastest hat-trick in FIFA World Cup history. This exceptional feat marked the first first-half World Cup hat-trick since Oleg Salenko’s famous five-goal haul in 1994. Every single French player on the pitch touched the ball in the sweeping buildup to Dembele’s third goal.
Second-Half Resilience and Maignan’s Heroics
Norway attempted to mount a serious comeback early in the second half. They received a massive lifeline three minutes after the restart when Theo Hernandez brought down Oscar Bobb inside the penalty area.
Jorgen Strand Larsen stepped up to take the spot-kick, but French goalkeeper Mike Maignan read it perfectly. Maignan comfortably saved the tame penalty, completely deflating Norway’s brief momentum.
From that moment on, France controlled the tempo of the match. Michael Olise sparkled in midfield with creative displays that drew glowing praise from television pundits. Assistant coach Guy Stephan, standing in for the temporarily absent Didier Deschamps, managed the closing stages of the game flawlessly.
Starting Lineups
Norway: Selvik; Ostigard, Bjorkan, Falchener, Berg; Thorstvedt, Aasgaard, Schjelderup, Bobb, Aursnes; Strand Larsen.
France: Maignan; Kounde, Upamecano, Lacroix, Hernandez; Kone, Tchouameni; Olise, Mbappe, Doue; Dembele.
Doue Puts the Icing on the Cake
The final blow came deep into stoppage time. Bradley Barcola burst down the wing with explosive pace and delivered an incredibly precise cross into the box.
Désiré Doué arrived at the perfect moment to score a lovely header. This goal marked the very first international headed goal of Doué’s career and sealed the game at 4-1.
What Lies Ahead in the Knockout Stages
With this dominant victory, France advances seamlessly into the Round of 32 with a perfect record of three wins from three games. This marks the first time Les Bleus have swept their World Cup group stage cleanly since they lifted the trophy back in 1998.
France is now slated to face a third-placed finisher, with a potential heavyweight clash against Sweden or Germany looming in the later rounds. Norway, despite the heavy defeat, still advances safely into the next round as the Group I runners-up. They will travel to Dallas to face a dangerous Côte d’Ivoire side on June 30.
