Class Act: Marquinhos Reveals Why He Consoled Gabriel After Heartbreaking Champions League Penalty Miss
Paris Saint-Germain captain Marquinhos has opened up about his beautiful gesture to console fellow Brazilian Gabriel Magalhaes following Arsenal’s devastating Champions League final defeat.
While the rest of the PSG squad sprinted away to celebrate back-to-back European titles at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Marquinhos took a different path. The veteran defender headed straight for a shattered Gabriel, who had just fired his decisive penalty over the crossbar to hand the trophy to the French giants.
The moment of pure sportsmanship earned widespread praise, including a tribute from Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, who labeled Marquinhos a “true gentleman.”
Shared Trauma From 12 Yards
Speaking after the trophy presentation, the 32-year-old PSG skipper revealed that his actions were born out of his own painful past. Marquinhos famously missed the crucial penalty for Brazil during the 2022 World Cup quarter-final exit against Croatia.
“As soon as he missed, I remembered what it felt like for me against Croatia,” Marquinhos admitted. “It’s a massive responsibility and a very difficult moment. I’ve been through it and know how tough it is. Gabriel desperately wanted this title, and I knew how hard that weight would feel on his shoulders.”
“One Moment Won’t Define Him”
Despite the heartbreak, Marquinhos was quick to defend Gabriel’s spectacular campaign. The center-back was instrumental in helping Arsenal secure their first Premier League title in 22 years, anchoring the toughest defense in England alongside William Saliba.
“I told him he can bounce back from this,” Marquinhos added. “Gabriel has had an amazing season and proved he is one of the best defenders in the world. He didn’t deserve to carry the entire weight of this defeat alone. I just wanted to take a few minutes out of our celebrations to hug him and wish him well.”
