Kylian Mbappe China Controversy: Star Apologizes After ‘Dictator’ Meme Backlash

The rapid escalation of the Kylian Mbappe China controversy has sent shockwaves through the global sports industry, highlighting the delicate relationship between European football stars and massive international markets. The French football superstar and Real Madrid forward found himself facing severe backlash after a video surfaced showing him reacting to a highly sensitive internet meme.

This single off-pitch moment quickly triggered immense commercial and broadcasting consequences in China, forcing the player and associated brands to navigate a sudden, large-scale public relations crisis.

The Dictator Meme and Immediate Public Outrage

The controversy originated from a circulated video clip where Mbappé reacted to an edited image that superimposed his face onto the body of China’s founding leader, Mao Zedong. In the footage, the 27-year-old athlete described the picture as the funniest meme he had seen, referring to the historical figure as “some guy – I think he’s a Chinese dictator”.

In China, satire or jokes regarding Mao—who ruled the nation from 1949 until his death in 1976—are viewed as deeply disrespectful and remain a strict social taboo. The casual remark immediately ignited fierce criticism and outrage across Chinese social media platforms, particularly Weibo.

Under immense public pressure, Mbappé swiftly published a formal apology in French, Mandarin, and English across his official social media accounts.

He admitted that his comment was “ill-judged” and stated that he possesses “deep respect for the Chinese people and their history”. The star emphasized that upsetting the public was absolutely not his intention and that he was merely reacting to an image of his own face.

The Commercial Fallout and Broadcast Suspensions

Despite his rapid and direct apology, the Kylian Mbappe China controversy immediately resulted in severe economic repercussions. Several major domestic corporations moved aggressively to distance themselves from the embattled forward.

Leading Chinese brands, including dairy giant Mengniu, cheesemaker Milkground, and beverage company Dongpeng, swiftly terminated their commercial partnerships with the player. Additionally, global luxury and sports brands such as Dior, Nike, Hublot, and On Running proactively removed promotional content featuring Mbappé from their Chinese social media channels.

The situation also heavily impacted European football broadcasts. According to Chinese state media outlet The Paper, public broadcaster CCTV suspended the airing of Spanish La Liga matches featuring Real Madrid. This significant media blackout underscores the massive operational risks that individual player controversies pose to the broader institutional presence of European football in the Chinese market.
