France U21 head coach Gérald Baticle is reportedly extremely disappointed after 20-year-old sensation George Ilenikhena chooses Super Eagles representation over pledging his future to the French youth setup. The highly-rated Al-Ittihad forward, who was born in Nigeria but raised in France, was heavily courted by the European nation before committing fully to his birth country.

Baticle had officially called up Ilenikhena for the recent France U21 fixtures alongside his Saudi-based peers Valentin Atangana Edoa and Nathan Zeze. However, the striker firmly informed the French camp that he was entirely committed to Nigeria and would not be making a U-turn regarding his international future.

His absence was noted as the French U21 side dismantled Switzerland 7-1 during their Euros qualification match, the very same week Ilenikhena scored during his senior debut for Nigeria in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers.

Why George Ilenikhena Chooses Super Eagles Despite French Ties

The successful recruitment of the young prodigy is largely credited to the personal intervention of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle. Chelle, who was closely monitoring the forward’s development, established a unique connection by conversing with Ilenikhena entirely in French.

  • The Language Bridge: Chelle’s ability to communicate fluently in French provided a natural comfort zone for the striker, who has lived in France since he was three years old.
  • A Scoring Debut: The decision immediately paid off for Nigeria, as Ilenikhena found the back of the net in his very first senior appearance for the Super Eagles in Uyo.
  • Attacking Depth: The Nigerian Football Federation viewed the young forward as a critical addition to support established stars like Victor Osimhen in the national team attack.

For France, losing out on the Amiens and Monaco youth product highlights the growing difficulty of retaining dual-national talents who are increasingly being successfully recruited by African nations. As Ilenikhena looks to solidify his spot under Eric Chelle, his commitment represents a massive, long-term victory for Nigerian football.
